The Vectra

Built on serious hardware.

The parts that matter most on a big coach are the ones you can't see from the campsite. Many other diesel pushers of this age have some of these features — very few have all of them.

400 HP Cummins ISL

Strong, proven diesel power that keeps a 40-foot coach moving confidently up mountain grades.

Allison 3000MH

A heavy-duty automatic built for this class of coach — smooth, predictable shifts.

Independent front & rear suspension

Independent suspension at both ends, with full air ride — smooth and composed the whole way.

Side radiator

Radiator mounted on the side, for better airflow and easier service access.

Rear engine, easy service

The diesel engine sits at the back — extremely easy to service.

Slide-out battery tray

The battery tray slides out, so the batteries are easy to reach and maintain.

Slide-out basement compartments

Deep basement compartments that slide out — storage you can actually get to.

Diesel generator

On a slide-out tray for easy access. Owner-reported approximately 3,000 hours; current meter reading to be verified.

Single-piece windshield

One large piece of glass for a clean, unbroken view from the cockpit.

Newer electric patio awning

Operates at the touch of a button.

Door awning

Shade at the entry door, not just the patio.

Air brakes + exhaust brake

Truck-grade stopping power, with engine braking to save the brakes on long descents.

Mileage

~37,500 miles.

Approximate · confirmed after Route 66

The road ahead is a lot longer than the road behind us.

This Vectra was built to cross states, climb grades and spend its life traveling.

The expected post-Route-66 mileage is approximately ~37,500 miles. The final odometer reading will be confirmed when the trip ends.

That combination is part of what makes this coach compelling: a premium 400 HP Cummins diesel pusher from the pre-DEF era, with remarkably modest mileage — and a lot of destinations still waiting.

Let the mileage, maintenance history and the platform itself tell the story.

Tires

Installed June 2025

Date codes 0924 and 1024 — manufactured late February to March 2024. Purchase invoice available.

Journey artwork: the Vectra on Route 66 in the Arizona desert

So we're taking it somewhere.

Before this Vectra meets its next owner, our family is taking it down America's Mother Road — in the centennial year of Route 66, 1926–2026.

Chicago → Santa Monica

Illinois · Missouri · Kansas · Oklahoma · Texas · New Mexico · Arizona · California

Not a motorhome sitting on a dealer lot waiting for its next adventure.

A motorhome having one.

Journey artwork based on the actual coach — not a trip photo.

The pre-DEF era

Before DEF.
Before SCR.
Built for the open road.

This Vectra comes from a sought-after period of diesel-pusher design: before diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and SCR systems became commonplace on later motorhomes.

That means no DEF tank to fill — and no DEF pump, dosing system, DEF-quality sensors or SCR system associated with later DEF-equipped powertrains.

What you get is a powerful 400 HP Cummins diesel-pusher platform from an era many enthusiasts value for its comparatively simpler emissions architecture.

This Vectra

Pre-DEF / Pre-SCR

  • ✕No DEF tank
  • ✕No DEF fluid to purchase
  • ✕No DEF dosing system
  • ✕No DEF-quality sensors
  • ✕No SCR system

The coach retains the emissions equipment appropriate to its model year. This simply reflects that it predates DEF/SCR systems.

Details that separate it

The difference is in the details.

Some of the best features of this Vectra don't jump out from a specification sheet.

Side-radiator diesel pusher

The engine is in the back.
The radiator isn't in your way.

This Vectra uses a side-radiator configuration rather than placing the radiator directly across the rear engine-access area.

  • —Better access to the rear of the engine for inspection and service
  • —The radiator doesn't occupy the primary rear engine-access opening
  • —Cooling-air routing is separated from a conventional rear-radiator layout
  • —The kind of engineering detail buyers of premium diesel pushers notice
Open rear engine compartment showing coolant tank, filters and chassis battery disconnect
Open the rear hatch — filters, fluid checks and battery disconnect right at hand.

INDEPENDENT

LEFT ↕ RIGHT ↕

RIGID AXLE

◼◼

ONE BUMP MOVES BOTH

Independent front suspension

40 feet long.
Engineered to drive like something more refined.

This coach uses independent front suspension rather than a conventional solid front axle. When one front wheel meets a bump, the other doesn't have to react the same way it would with a rigid axle tying them together.

  • —More refined response to uneven road surfaces
  • —Steering and handling suited to a premium highway coach
  • —Better isolation of individual wheel movement

This was a premium chassis design.

One-piece panoramic windshield

One windshield.
One incredible view.

View from the driver's seat of the Vectra looking out through the one-piece windshield
From the driver's seat — one piece of glass, no center divider
Captain's chair in the Vectra cockpit in daylight, tan leather with warm wood trim
The cockpit in daylight — tan leather and warm wood

One of the first things you notice from the cockpit isn't the dashboard. It's the view.

The massive one-piece windshield turns the front of the coach into a panoramic window on the road ahead. No center seam dividing the view.

Just road.

The best screen in the coach is the one you drive through.

Interior

A home that happens to move.

Exceptionally clean and carefully maintained for its age — and yes, it really is that clean inside.
Vectra kitchen shown twice — double-basin sink and lit gas cooktop uncovered, then both covered with flush solid-surface counter covers
Top: sink and cooktop in use. Bottom: both covered with matching solid-surface counters.

Cover the sink and the stove, and the counter keeps going.

Both take matching solid-surface covers, so the work surface runs uninterrupted while you're prepping, serving or cleaning. Uncover them and it's a full kitchen — double-basin sink, gas cooktop, convection microwave, dishwasher.

Vectra bathroom vanity — oval sink in a solid-surface counter, warm wood cabinet, framed mirror and window with mini-blinds

A seat with real seashells pressed into clear resin.

Warm wood, tile floors, and a seat full of seashells.

The bath carries the same wood cabinetry as the rest of the coach — framed mirror over the vanity, a window for daylight and air, tile floors that wipe clean. The little touches are personal: a toilet seat with real seashells pressed into clear resin. It's the kind of detail you find in a coach that was actually lived in.

The large walk-in shower is just out of frame — and there are three sinks in the coach in all.

Vectra living area with leather sofas, warm wood cabinetry and a wall-mounted TV, looking forward to the two front captain's chairs
The living room faces the windshield — leather sofas, warm wood cabinetry, and the entertainment wall behind you.
Vectra master bedroom slide-out with a made king bed, cream quilted comforter, plush toys and accent pillows, an arched wood headboard, built-in bedside tables and overhead cabinets
The bedroom slide-out — king Sleep Number bed, arched wood headboard, built-in bedside tables and overhead cabinets.

The bedroom is a king-size Sleep Number.

The bed sits in its own slide-out, so it has room to be a real bed — a 72 × 80-inch Sleep Number king you set to your own firmness. Arched wood headboard, built-in bedside tables, overhead cabinets and reading lights on both sides, with the same warm damask walls as the rest of the coach.

The stuffed animals stay, if you'd like. They've earned the mileage.

  • —Three-slide 40KD floorplan
  • —Premium cabinetry
  • —Solid-surface countertops
  • —Tile flooring
  • —72" × 80" Sleep Number king bed

America's Mother Road · 1926–2026 · The 100-Year Anniversary

Chicago → Santa Monica

Route 66 opened in 1926, and in 2026 it turns one hundred. We're marking the centennial of America's Mother Road the way it deserves — rolling down it in a coach that was made for a trip like this.

The story isn't that an old RV is going on Route 66. It's that this type of coach was made for a trip like this.

  • —Air suspension
  • —Independent front suspension
  • —Air brakes
  • —Side-radiator diesel-pusher architecture

The Route 66 cap on the kitchen counter

The ultimate Route 66 travel experience.

Not a hotel-to-hotel drive. The kitchen is behind you, the bed is down the hall, and the laundry is already in. When the day's mileage is done, you aren't hunting for a room — you're already home, with the road still outside the window.

The Vectra parked and plugged in for the night in front of the Boots Motel, its carport bays outlined in green neon
Boots Motel — Carthage, Missouri

Every night, a different address.

One evening it's a historic motel with green neon arches next door. The next, it's a pull-through somewhere you circled on the map. The coach is already set up, the car is still hitched, and the coffee is in the kitchen — you wake up, decide which way to turn, and keep going.

The Vectra and Santa Fe beside the Dream Maker Station mid-point Route 66 sign in Adrian, Texas
The mid-point of Route 66 — Adrian, Texas

Halfway is a place you can park.

Out in the Texas flatlands the road marks its own middle — a sign, a station, a sculpture hung with padlocks. Most people drive past it. With this setup you can stop, stay, and see what's on the other side of the sign.

Background, cap, Boots Motel and mid-point photos: real photos from the road. Other landscape images on this page are journey artwork — real photos from the trip will keep appearing here as the journey happens.
